Student shoots the chef and wins

Inspired by the style of film noir, Charles Sturt University (CSU) photography student Ms Sophie Schirmer took to a bleak alleyway to capture and shoot chef John Church from Eat at Romano’s in Wagga Wagga in regional NSW.
 Ms Sophie Schirmer has won the student category in the annual Sydney Morning Herald Shoot the Chef! photographic competition. Originally from Lockhart in the south-west of NSW, Ms Schirmer graduated from CSU in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts (Photography) and is currently undertaking a Master of Arts Practice specialising in photography.
Ms Schirmer has won two return airline tickets from Sydney to Europe. Her winning photo of chef John Church will be exhibited at Star City in Sydney during the Sydney International Food Festival from Thursday 1 October until Friday 31 October.
“I had great fun working with John and am thrilled to be named the student winner of this high profile and competitive event,” said Ms Schirmer.
“It has been my dream to go to London after completing my studies at Charles Sturt University in search of international experience in commercial photography and this prize will go a long way to helping my fulfil this dream.”
“This award confirms Sophie’s talent behind the lens and will serve her well as she carves out a career in photography,” said Mr Jamie Holcombe, photography lecturer in the School of Visual and Performing Arts at CSU at Wagga Wagga.
Ms Schirmer’s award comes as two recent CSU photography graduates had their works selected to hang in the National Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra in 2009. Read more here.
