Charles Sturt University (CSU) will hold one ceremony in Canberra on Friday 22 May, as 70 graduates receive their degrees, diplomas and certificates from CSU Chancellor Lawrie Willett, AO.

 

The occasional speaker will be Professor Hilary Charlesworth, Director of the Centre for International Governance and Justice at the Australian National University (ANU). She has held visiting appointments at Washington and Lee School of Law, New York University Global Law School, at Université de Paris, as Manley O Hudson Visiting Professor of International Law at Harvard Law School, and as Wayne Morse Professor at the University of Oregon. She was also the 2005 Sir Ninian Stephen Fellow at the Asia-Pacific Centre for Military Law at the Law Faculty, University of Melbourne and was winner (with Christine Chinkin) of the Goler T Butcher Medal awarded by the American Society of International Law in 2006, for "outstanding contributions to the development of international human rights law".

Mr Andrew Bowyer will be presented with a University Medal, the highest honour for academic achievement at CSU, when he receives his Bachelor of Theology with Honours Class 1. Ordained a deacon in the Anglican Church of Australia in November 2008, Mr Bowyer is currently Assistant Minister at the Merimbula-Pambula parish on the NSW South Coast. “I hope to continue with postgraduate studies overseas in the future, but until then, I'm savouring the challenges of rural church ministry in a beautiful part of NSW,” the 26-year-old said.

 

Three graduates will be awarded Doctors of Philosophy and one a Doctor of Ministry from Charles Sturt University, including Cliff Bird from the Solomon Islands. His PhD thesis was a theological exploration of the role of land in the Solomon Islands, a constant issue and source of contention in the Pacific Island nation. Dr Bird is currently with the Pacific Theological College in Suva, Fiji Islands, and will not be able to attend the Canberra ceremony.
