A new book on Peace Education

Dr James Page - Graduate Diploma in Education 1980
Researcher, Southern Cross University

Dr James Page, a Charles Sturt University graduate in education, has recently published a new book on peace education, under the title Peace Education: Exploring Ethical and Philosophical Foundations, published with Information Age Publishing.

The Foreword for Dr Page’s new book was written by Koichiro Matsuura, the Director-General of UNESCO.  In the Foreword, the Director-General describes the new book as constituting "an important addition to the emerging literature on peace education and the culture of peace".

Dr Page has enjoyed wide professional experience since leaving Charles Sturt University.  He has taught extensively in secondary education, successfully completed anthropological research which led to a research masters degree, worked with UNESCO in Paris, and completed a PhD degree in peace education.  Currently he is involved in teaching and research at university level.

As a young man just leaving university, Dr Page worked as a secondary teacher.  Like most beginning teachers, he says “my first few years constituted a very steep learning curve”.

When asked if this influenced his career, he responded “Yes, in a way, I think this first job did influence my career path, in that I’m still involved in teaching although now at university level and as well I am involved in research work, which is extremely interesting”.

For Dr Page, teaching constitutes an important responsibility, but also a great privilege.  He credits his students for his drive and commitment saying “I gain much energy from interaction with students”.

In response to the question, what were the strong influences in your life, he commented “I think working in the Two Thirds World (also known as the developing world) was probably the single most formative influence in my life.  It helps you put what you see and experience in the One Third World (also known as the developed world) in perspective”.

To all young graduates starting out in their career and life’s journey Dr Page advises perseverance.  He calls on Winston Churchill who once defined success as continuing to fail without becoming discouraged to illustrate this message.
