ABC Managing Director Michelle Guthrie shares her analysis of the challenges faced by the ABC and the wider media industry and how the public broadcaster is using innovation to remain unique and distinct to Australia audiences.

The media industry is faced with a unique set of challenges as digital disruption creates an increasingly fragmented market and consumers become empowered more than ever before. Like all media organisations, the ABC must change and adapt to these challenges and find new ways of creating and delivering content its audiences want and expect. The ABC recently announced a new strategy aimed at ensuring it remains relevant to all audiences and has started a conversation with its content makers about how it remains the source of Australian stories and conversations.

Michelle Guthrie joined the ABC as Managing Director in May 2016. She has led the national broadcaster in a new strategic direction with a clear focus on maintaining its relevance and delivering great Australian content in a fast-changing, fragmented and increasingly global media market. In March 2017 Michelle announced a major cultural and structural transformation at the ABC to make it better equipped to meet the challenges of the digital era.

Michelle brings to the ABC experience and expertise in media management, content development, and a detailed knowledge of both traditional broadcasting and the new digital media landscape. Over the last 25 years she has worked for a range of broadcasting and media organisations in Australia, Europe and Asia, including BSkyB, Star TV and Google.
