CSU to host Power of Engineering event

The next generation of female engineers will head to Charles Sturt University to attend The Power of Engineering event from 16 to 17 August.

Hosted by CSU Engineering in Bathurst the event will welcome 250 years 8 to 10 high school female students from as far away as Gilgandra and Dubbo as well as students from Bathurst, Blayney, Cowra and Orange.

The Power of Engineering event began in 2012 to show high school students the opportunities a career in engineering presents and what the impact it has on the world. The event is particularly aimed at female, regional and Indigenous students.

CSU Foundation Professor of Engineering Euan Lindsay said the event is a rare opportunity for regional students to learn from industry experts, academics and leaders and hear  firsthand how their community benefits from engineering.

“The vision of The Power of Engineering is to inspire students to pursue a diverse and creative career in engineering – we share this vision within the CSU Engineering program.

The Power of Engineering is an important way to strengthen the pathway to Engineering for female students, to show them that pursuing a career in this field will  give them the opportunity to make an impact on the community and help people,” Professor Lindsay said.

The two-day event includes workshops by Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), E-NAble (digital humanitarians that print 3D hands), Energy Australia and the CSU Engineering academic team.

Workshops:

AEMO

By using a game lead by AEMO’s Aaron Millican, Ian Commerford and Ruth Guest students will learn how the Australian energy market works. They will also learn how to plan an anticipate energy demand while at the same time getting value for money.

This hands-on workshop led by Christopher Ly (3D Printing Guy) will teach students about 3D printing by printing their hands with the University’s specialised printer.

Windy tower

Students will be challenged to build a paper tower with a turbine that’s function is to capture the wind, convert it to energy without falling down.

Energy Australia

Jenny Ratsep from Energy Australia will teach students how to construct a digital circuit using the power of mathematics.
