Charles Sturt University (CSU) congratulates Ms Carmel O’Regan on being awarded the LH Martin Institute Award for Excellence in Leadership by the Association for Tertiary Education Management (ATEM) and the Campus Morning Mail.

The award recognises Ms O’Regan’s achievements in tertiary education management and her exceptional leadership skills as Executive Director of the CSU Division of Student Administration.

CSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Andrew Vann said the award recognised the leadership and dedication of Ms O’Regan to improve the student experience and streamline systems.

“The award recognises Carmel’s leadership and in particular her ability to inspire, motivate and communicate a vision across her team and the University more broadly,” Professor Vann said.

Ms O’Regan said it was a great honour to be recognised by ATEM, a professional association of administrators and managers working in tertiary education.

“Being recognised by industry peers highlights the impact and significance of the work I have done at Charles Sturt University in the refresh of the Division of Student Administration,” Ms O’Regan said.

Ms O’Regan has been successful in renewing the culture of the Division to one of a ‘can do’ attitude that seeks innovative solutions to the ongoing challenges of the higher education sector. She has also been successful in developing a strong team of senior leaders who report to her, and has excellent people management and succession planning abilities.

When talking about what makes a great leader, Ms O’Regan said leadership should take staff and colleagues along with changes that are occurring, and motivate and inspire them by giving sound vision and direction.

To be recognised by ATEM a nominee must demonstrate the leadership qualities of an exceptional practitioner. This includes being leader who challenges current thinking, motivates strong teams and demonstrates excellence in listening and leading change.

Ms O’Regan was presented the LH Martin Institute Award for Excellence in Leadership at a ceremony in Perth on Monday 10 September.
