Looking back to forge ahead in excellence

Chancellor Mr Lawrie Willett, AO launching the 20th anniversary of CSU.While 2009 provides Charles Sturt University (CSU) with an opportunity to celebrate its 20th anniversary, the year is also a time to honour the 114 year tradition of excellence and innovation in teaching, learning and research.

The University was established when the Charles Sturt University Act was passed by the NSW Parliament in July 1989. However the institution’s history can be traced back to the Bathurst Experimental Farm, established in 1895.

The official opening ceremony for the University’s 20th anniversary will be held from 11am, Thursday 12 March in Joyes Hall at CSU at Wagga Wagga.

Following an academic procession, Chancellor Mr Lawrie Willett, AO, will address the ceremony which will be attended by the CSU community including members of the University’s governing body, the CSU Council. Mayors from throughout the University’s footprint in central west and southern NSW, as well as a broad section of the local communities, have been invited to attend the event.

“We must hold fast to our University’s tradition of excellence as the institution continues on an exciting journey to develop new and innovative ways of advancing discovery and learning,” said the Vice-Chancellor and President of CSU, Professor Ian Goulter.

“As we must not forget our past extending back over more than 100 years, the University must adhere to our motto and the words of the Australian explorer and our namesake, Captain Charles Sturt – for the public good.

During the opening ceremony on Thursday 12 March, the late Foundation Chancellor of the University, Dr David Asimus, AO, will be honoured with a launch of an endowment in his name. The Asimus Endowment for Agriculture will support essential teaching and research in agricultural sustainability. Read more here.
