CSU in Dubbo readies for students new and old
Charles Sturt University (CSU) in Dubbo is readying to welcome approximately 80 new students for the start of Orientation Week (O Week) on Monday 20 February before the start of Session One of the new academic year on Monday 27 February. Dr Bev Moriarty, the Head of CSU in Dubbo, said, “We are delighted and excited to welcome new students, many of whom will be accompanied by parents, when they arrive at the University this weekend for registration and allocation of on-campus accommodation. All staff aim to make the students’ tranistion to university life as smooth as possible so they can enjoy the challenges and opportunities that tertiary study offers.” The students will register between 12noon to 4pm on Sunday 19 at the Multipurpose Hall (building 920) for their on-campus accommodation. An accommodation information session for students and parents is scheduled at 4.30pm, to be followed by a barbeque. The University expects about 3 000 new domestic students and 260 new international students on its NSW campuses for its first intake this year, and a further 5 000 new domestic distance education students.

Local welcomes for VC
Fresh into his new job, the new Vice-Chancellor and President of Charles Sturt University (CSU) Professor Andrew Vann is clocking up the kilometres as he familiarises himself with the institution and its staff. During informal visits hosted by the Heads of Campus, Professor Vann will meet staff at CSU in Albury-Wodonga, Bathurst, Dubbo, Orange and Wagga Wagga in coming weeks. Professor Vann joined the University this month from James Cook University in Townsville, where he was Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor. He will meet with CSU staff in Dubbo this Friday 27 January, Bathurst on Thursday 2 February, Wagga Wagga on Monday 6 February, and Orange on Friday 24 February. Graduation at CSU in Dubbo next week
Students from a range of disciplines at Charles Sturt University (CSU) in Dubbo will graduate at a ceremony on Monday 12 December. The Head of Campus at CSU in Dubbo, Dr Beverley Moriarty, said, “I’m delighted that over 80 students from teaching, nursing, business and social work courses will attend the Charles Sturt University graduation in Dubbo this year. Many of these graduates will take up employment in regional NSW and make a significant contribution to their communities.” The Occasional Address will be delivered by Captain Clyde Thomson, GM, Executive Director of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, South Eastern Section.

PREP equals preparation
More than 1 360 school leavers who successfully applied for courses at Charles Sturt University (CSU) through the Principal’s Report Entry Program (PREP) will be acknowledged during morning tea ceremonies in Albury-Wodonga, Bathurst, Dubbo and Orange this Friday 9 December. Coordinator of the University’s early entry PREP scheme, Mr Matthew Evans, said the scheme has grown in size and prestige in recent years. “We received almost 2 000 applications for the PREP scheme this year and the standard of the applications continues to increase, meaning we can offer the best students early entry into degrees. The successful applicants can then start preparing for their university education. PREP is an early entry scheme designed to attract academically talented students from high schools and TAFE in non-metropolitan areas in NSW, ACT and Victoria.” This is the first year CSU has formally celebrated the PREP offers with a morning tea ceremony.

Dentist sinks teeth into Dubbo
Having grown up in Paris, France, dentist Dr Yasmina Andreani now calls Dubbo home. She recently started work at Charles Sturt University’s (CSU) Dental and Oral Health Clinic in Dubbo where she is available Mondays and Tuesdays, with the potential to increase to more days in 2012. Dr Andreani travels to Sydney most weeks to tutor at the University of Sydney where she obtained both her science and dentistry degrees with Honours. “I moved to Dubbo after working in Sydney for a while and I love the relaxing lifestyle that Dubbo offers,” said Dr Andreani. After working at two local dental surgeries, Dr Andreani is enjoying her new position at CSU. “I love the independence as a dentist here and the fantastic support that Charles Sturt University offers to staff.” Patients can benefit from the electronic claiming service, HICAPS, which enables patients to do on-the-spot claims. Government assistance plans and public health vouchers are also accepted. Appointments can be made on 1300 278 642.

New graduation season at CSU
December hails the arrival of the graduation season at Charles Sturt University (CSU). In response to the needs of students, CSU is holding its graduations in Albury-Wodonga, Bathurst, Canberra, Dubbo, Orange and Wagga Wagga from Saturday 10 December to Saturday 17 December. The change from a graduation season in the first half of the year will allow students at CSU to attend their ceremony and receive their awards much closer to the completion of their course. Graduations will be held at CSU in Albury-Wodonga on Friday 16 December and Saturday 17 December; in Bathurst on Thursday 15, Friday 16 and Saturday 17 December; in Canberra on Saturday 10 December; in Dubbo on Monday 12 December; in Orange on Tuesday 13 December; and in Wagga Wagga on Monday 12, Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 December. Indigenous staff conference in Orange
Indigenous staff at Charles Sturt University (CSU) will meet in Orange this week to engage in professional development, encourage interaction and strengthen networks at the annual Indigenous Staff Conference. Held on Wednesday 9 and Thursday 10 November, the conference will be titled Nguluway, a Wiradjuri word meaning ‘meeting with each other’. “Charles Sturt University has increased its Indigenous staff numbers in recent years and we currently have 56 in total, equating to 2.7 per cent of the staff population,” CSU Indigenous Employment Coordinator, Ms Catherine Maxwell said. “We recruit Indigenous staff to cover a broader range of areas within the organisation. We now have Indigenous staff not only represented within the Centre for Indigenous Studies at Charles Sturt University in Dubbo and the Indigenous Student Services’ centres across our campuses but also within our divisions, faculties and service areas.”
