$5,000 scholarships boost higher education opportunities for current and former defence personnel

Current and former Australian Defence Force members in Dubbo can now benefit from a $5,000 scholarship to advance their studies at Charles Sturt University.

Current and former Australian Defence Force members in Dubbo can now benefit from a $5,000 scholarship to advance their studies at Charles Sturt University.

The Dubbo RSL Sub-Branch and Dubbo RSL Memorial Club have committed to fund two $5,000 scholarships in their names each year for three years, totalling $30,000.

Charles Sturt Development Officer (Major Gifts) Mr Justin Williams said the University welcomed the scholarship partnership with the two key veteran support organisations in Dubbo.

“I love working with partners that have an innovative approach to improving the outcomes for their members,” Mr Williams said.

“In alleviating some of the costs of education, the RSL will increase the chances of their members furthering their careers and outcomes beyond service to their country.”

The scholarships are open and close on Monday 5 February 2024. They are the first new Dubbo-based scholarships to be funded in several years.

One of the Dubbo RSL Sub-Branch’s Vice Presidents Mr David Hunt said both clubs were proud to be able to assist and empower veterans and serving members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) in their pursuit of higher education.

"As is the nature of organisations such as ours, we spend a majority of our time acknowledging the past through our common bonds of having served in the ADF and recognising those who died doing so, which is incredibly important,” Mr Hunt said.

“However, the Dubbo RSL Sub-Branch and the Dubbo RSL Memorial Club also recognise the help that is needed to create a better future for our veterans and part of that is by investing in helping those veterans undertaking tertiary education.

“Whether you have served, are still serving, full-time, or a reservist - it does not matter. Anyone who signed the 'dotted line' to literally give their lives to the ADF and our country is considered an equal in our veteran community.

“So, I encourage anyone out there who has signed that line and wants to either continue on in post-graduate study or dive into university for the first time to give it a go and apply for these scholarships."

Applicants must be a current or former member of the Australian Defence Force, supplying relevant identification, and must reside in the Dubbo Local Government Area.
