Charles Sturt University in Albury-Wodonga hosted approximately 160 Year 6 school students on Wednesday 19 July to give them a taste of university life and inspire their future high school studies.

The students were from Wodonga West Primary School and Wodonga Primary School.

During the day the students participated in sessions led by academic staff in pharmacy, physiotherapy and science, and had the chance to experience a practical workshop using university facilities.

Program Coordinator (Albury-Wodonga) for the Future Moves program in the Charles Sturt Division of Student Success, Miss Jessica Ljubojevic, said the students were given an on-campus experience to help understand what tertiary education is.

“Check It Out! Day is designed to play a vital role in spreading awareness about higher education and clearing up any misconceptions Year 6 students may have about university,” Miss Ljubojevic said.

“Students in regional and remote areas are underrepresented in higher education, so it is heartening to see that efforts are being made to ensure those students are not left behind.

“For many of them, attending university may be a new and exciting path that they are ready to embark on, potentially even being the first in their family to do so.”

Miss Ljubojevic said Check It Out! offers young learners the chance to participate in a wide range of academic areas available at Charles Sturt.

“The students have a wonderful opportunity to participate in educational sessions conducted by academic staff in various fields such as nursing, education, podiatry, and occupational therapy,” she said.

“As they move into high school next year, these students now have the orientation and familiarity with university life to help guide them in achieving goals and aspirations throughout high school, knowing their full potential.”

The students were also given a tour of the campus to showcase other facilities, and the day ended with participation in a mock graduation ceremony.
