High school students receive experience and insights into latest careers in agriculture sector

High school students from the Riverina Murray region learned about careers in the modern agriculture industry and how they can contribute to the future of the agricultural workforce during AgVision Yanco 2024.

Charles Sturt University leant its expertise during the Agvision Yanco event that showcased to 550 students from 30 schools the benefits and opportunities of a career in agriculture.

Charles Sturt was a major sponsor of the event AgVision Yanco which was held at Yanco Agricultural High School on Wednesday 11 September.

Year 9 to 12 students from 30 schools in the Riverina Murray region attended the event, featuring 41 interactive workshops.

Students were able to network with other students and industry representatives while learning about skills in modern agriculture and feeling inspired about the future of the agricultural workforce.

Charles Sturt’s Global Digital Farm trailer was in attendance, with the University’s Head of Sustainable and Digital Agriculture Mr Jon Medway delivering the keynote commencement speech.

Mr Jon Medway said the AgVision event and Yanco Agricultural High School are important to the University.

“Charles Sturt University is passionate about connecting students with hands-on workshops to create opportunities for them to be exposed to a diverse range of agricultural careers and connect schools with industry,” he said.

“We are located in the regions and want to make a difference through education and regional engagement.”

Charles Sturt University’s course portfolio aligns with the education and career needs of future generations of agricultural industry experts in agriculture and environment and animal and veterinary science.

The event featured representatives from Charles Sturt, Thoroughbred Breeders Association, Intersales, Hutcheon and Pearce, Local Land Services, Cotton Australia, Rabobank, Coleambally Irrigation, National Farmers Federation, Casella Family Wines, TAFE NSW and more.

This event was delivered by Regional Economic Development and Training Services NSW under the Targeted Workforce Development Scheme.
