Abbie and Lucy Writer grew up in Bathurst where they went to school, TAFE and university to study a Bachelor of Nursing together in the Charles Sturt School of Nursing, Paramedicine and Healthcare Sciences, and they continue to call the city home.
It was the twins’ home environment that sparked their love of bringing joy to people during tough times.
“Our family is so loving and caring; I think that’s where we get those morals and why we want to provide it to the vulnerable when it could be the worst day of their lives,” they said.
“We are fun people and we love to make each other laugh.”
For Abbie, following a career in nursing was an easy choice.
“I studied a TAFE course while I was completing Year 11 and 12 and fell in love with caring for people, helping them and knowing I can make a difference for the patients and families,” Abbie said.
Lucy shared a similar view, having also completed the Certificate III in Human Services at TAFE.
“Like Abbie, I was instantly drawn to caring for people and being that person they could trust,” Lucy said.
These values have been shared during their experience studying at Charles Sturt , where they met and learned from like-minded people.
“Throughout my studies at Charles Sturt University, I have reached many milestones and enjoyed so many experiences from creating lifelong friends and playing in sporting clubs to getting good grades on my assignments and exams,” Abbie said.
Lucy said she gained valuable knowledge and skills during her studies.
“I never thought I could obtain these skills until I attended university, and it has been an unreal experience where I met my now best friends, played sports and was a part of creating such a lovable space,” Lucy said.
“I was also lucky enough to be able to travel and experience so many opportunities while attending placements.”
For both sisters, Charles Sturt’s supportive learning environment was a highlight of their studies.
“The lecturers all helped me achieve my goals and supported me throughout the three years of the degree,” Abbie said.
“I don’t think I would’ve been able to get through the degree without them; this and having friends’ support throughout the course made a world of difference.”
Lucy said, “Being able to communicate and obtain support and advice from all my lecturers throughout the three years of study was extremely valuable, and I have taken with me, beyond graduation, the unwavering support I was given by both the lecturers and the amazing friends I made along the way.”
“I will be using this support and forwarding it on to my future career.”
After all they’ve learned, finally graduating in the Charles Sturt Faculty of Science and Health has left Abbie and Lucy feeling excited for what the future might hold.
“I can’t wait to get into the real working world and put my knowledge and skills into something I know I am going to enjoy,” Abbie said.
“It seems like yesterday I was getting organised for Orientation Week, but I can’t wait to put all my skills and experience into practice and provide the best care I can to my community,” Lucy said.
The pair have decided to remain in Bathurst where they’ve secured nursing jobs.
“All our family and friends are here, and this is the place we’ve known and loved our whole lives,” they said.
