Charles Sturt University in Bathurst has been a leading provider of communication and media professionals for more than 50 years and will host a day-long workshop for Years 9-12 students interested in studying in this exciting and diverse field.

The ‘Making It In Media’ workshop will be hosted by the Charles Sturt School of Information and Communication Studies on Friday 14 November for students from across the central west, and around NSW, who are interested in studying the Bachelor of Communication.

Communication academics Dr Roslyn Cox, Dr Rachel Walls and Ms Zoe Rodwell will lead the workshop, which offers a fun, engaging and hands-on experience for students and offers insights on what it is like to study communication at Charles Sturt University.

“We bring the students into our TV studio and they have a chance to be on camera, to introduce a news story, to see what happens behind the camera and to write their own radio scripts as part of a communication strategy,” Dr Cox said.

“It isn’t always clear what studying communication entails, or the career paths our degree offers, so this workshop highlights what students study here and the wide range of careers and opportunities our graduates can pursue in the communication field.”

Dr Cox said this is the third year ‘Making It In Media’ has been held and it highlights the University’s new multi-million dollar communication precinct, equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

Students will collaborate in the cutting-edge TV studio and creative hub, explore specialist studios and performance spaces and tour the podcast suites and on-campus radio station 2MCE — a teaching space where students produce stories for National Radio News bulletins broadcast across Australia.

Charles Sturt alumna Ms Amy O’Halloran is the special guest for the workshop. Amy will share insights into her role with 7Network News and the exciting professional opportunities she has had since her recent graduation.

“It will be really inspiring for potential communication students to hear from Amy, who has done so many fantastic things since graduating a bit over a year ago,” Dr Cox said.

“Amy will share stories about her work as a reporter and broadcaster at Seven, as well as advice on how to take best advantage of opportunities in both the classroom and at 2MCE and National Radio News on our Charles Sturt University campus.”

Commencing at 9.30am on Friday 14 November, and concluding at 2.30pm, the event will be staged in and around the new Charles Sturt University Communication Precinct and TV Studio in building 1399.

Participants are asked to register for the ‘Making It In Media’ workshop as soon as possible to assist with arrangements for the workshop.
