A Charles Sturt University academic will join representatives from the Australian Government to present research on water management for the Murray Darling Basin via a free webinar on Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 March.
The webinars are part of a continuing conversation with the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder (CEWH) with the theme ‘From Droughts to Flooding Rains’.
Associate Professor in Ecology in the Charles Sturt School of Agriculture, Environmental and Veterinary Sciences, Dr Skye Wassens will join the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder Mr Hilton Taylor, along with Local Engagement Officer Mr Jason Wilson on the panel.
The panellists will discuss how water for the environment is being used this year to improve the health of the Basin’s waterways, and the plants and animals that depend on them.
Mr Wilson will discuss bird breeding in the Dharriwaa (Narran Lakes), while Dr Wassens will provide an update on how water for the environment is being used in the Murrumbidgee to support waterbirds in wet and dry times.
“Water for the environment is a key way that we can protect river and wetlands and support biodiversity,” said Dr Wassens.
“By working together as a team, communities, scientists and governments are achieving positive outcomes for native species and the environment.
“The conversations with the CEWH are a great way of keeping up-to-date with water for the environment, to ask questions and share ideas,” she said.
Webinar participants can choose between two sessions:
- Monday 7 March from 7pm until 8pm, and
- Tuesday 8 March from 12pm until 1pm
Register here to attend the evening webinar on Monday 7 March (7pm to 8pm) and here to attend the lunchtime session on Tuesday 8 March (2pm to 1pm).
Dr Wassens' research was captured by the Charles Sturt Gulbali Institute of Agriculture, Water and Environment which is a strategic investment by Charles Sturt University to drive integrated research to optimise farming systems, enhance freshwater ecosystems and improve environmental management, to deliver benefits across Australia and globally.
