High school students experience a day-in-the-life of healthcare professionals

Students from Years 10 to 12 were given insight into health courses and careers on offer after high school at an event in Orange on Tuesday 13 May.

High school students learned first-hand about a ‘day-in-the-life’ of healthcare professionals during an insightful day at Charles Sturt University in Orange.

Charles Sturt’s Division of Customer Experience and Regional Industry Education Partnerships (RIEP) hosted the Health and Community Services Explore Day for students in years 10 to 12 in the Central West.

The event provided prospective students from Years 10 to 12 with the opportunity to understand the various health courses and career options that are available.

Participants were able to connect with their chosen areas of study while becoming familiar with the University’s facilities.

Students in Years 10 and 11 were supported to make career decisions during their final years of school while students in Year 12 get peace of mind they have made the right career decision for their future.

Executive Dean of the Charles Sturt Faculty of Science and Health Professor Megan Smith said Charles Sturt was working towards growing the regional healthcare sector by giving prospective students realistic insights into their career options.

“We want students in the Central West to consider Charles Sturt University as a top choice for those interested in health courses and careers,” she said.

“The event helped students to better understand the diverse health career opportunities.”

Students heard from an Exercise and Sport Scientist, a Youth Care Coordinator/Provisional Psychologist, Social Worker with NSW Health and representatives from Western NSW Local Health District, Orange Aboriginal Medical Service and School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships.

Topics covered included a ‘day-in-the-life’ of a health professionals, what are the challenges and highlights of a career in health and what tips can be given to students wanting to enter the same course or career?

The Health and Community Services Explore Day was held at Charles Sturt in Orange on Tuesday 13 May.
