Charles Sturt University has formed a new research group dedicated to the investigation and activation of media and communication advancements.

The Charles Sturt Media Lab research group has been established in parallel with the development of the new Communication Precinct in late 2024 at Charles Sturt in Bathurst, alongside the new Bachelor of Communication.

The experimental, hybrid space focuses on projects at the intersection of technology, media and society connecting with Charles Sturt’s regional and rural communities.

Media Lab Co-Lead and Senior Lecturer in Communication in the Charles Sturt School of Information and Communication Studies Dr Travis Holland said the Lab’s creation was essential in today’s media landscape.

“Media is rapidly evolving, and the Charles Sturt Media Lab provides a practice-based environment where academics and students can push the boundaries of communication research and practice,” Dr Holland said.

“Organisations and local governments are facing twin challenges of collapsing media industries and the need to ensure important messages reach the right people during volatile times.

“We think there are locally relevant responses to these challenges which our Lab could address.”

The Media Lab is pursuing contemporary research innovation and excellence in response to morphing media-tech ecologies, social media use and the important consequences of this for society.

Media Lab Co-Lead and Lecturer in Communication in the Charles Sturt School of Information and Communication Studies Ms Michelle O’Connor said the Lab would engage researchers, students and industry partners alike.

“The Media Lab is a fantastic opportunity to bring together diverse perspectives and expertise in media research and practice,” she said.

“It provides a space for students, academics and industry to collaborate on projects that shape the possibilities for media and our communities.”

Importantly, the Media Lab will also partner directly with other research institutions at Charles Sturt including the Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Futures Institute and the Children’s Voices Centre.
