Charles Sturt University representatives and students have welcomed the generous corporate donation by Simplot Australia’s Bathurst site to the Student Food Pantry on the Bathurst campus.

Charles Sturt Advancement Manager of Development Mr Justin Williams said this generous donation from Simplot Bathurst to stock pantry staples and essential items for students in need will make a tangible difference to their lives.

“The Student Food Pantry is a vital service and community support like this helps us continue to provide essential resources to those who need it most,” he said.

“Simplot Bathurst’s $5,000 donation demonstrates strong local industry support for student welfare and food security at Charles Sturt University and sets a powerful example encouraging other local businesses and individuals to support the pantry and student wellbeing.”

The Bathurst Student Food Pantry has also received a recent in-kind donation from Simplot Australia of mixed canned goods for use by students.

Simplot Bathurst Plant Director Mr Glenn Commins said Simplot Bathurst made the donation as part of its commitment to initiatives that align with its values of food security, health and wellbeing. The Bathurst site has been part of the community for nearly 100 years, producing nutritious food under iconic Australian brands such as Edgell, Birds Eye and Chiko.

“Simplot’s contribution reflects its commitment to supporting the communities in which we operate,” Mr Commins said.

Partnering with Charles Sturt University allows us to invest in the future of our community and we’re proud to stand behind initiatives like the Student Food Pantry.”

The University’s six main campuses in Albury-Wodonga, Bathurst, Dubbo, Orange, Port Macquarie and Wagga Wagga each have a Student Food Pantry that provides essential groceries and household items to students experiencing financial hardship, to help them focus on their studies.

Mr Williams said the rising cost of living continues to impact students, many of whom struggle to afford necessities, so the Student Food Pantry provides free food and essential items to help students focus on their studies without the burden of food insecurity.

“The Bathurst Student Food Pantry, which is currently supported by the Skilling Australian’s Fund, spends $1,000 per week on groceries for the pantry and sees more than 100 students accessing the service each week,” he said.

“A recent survey of Charles Sturt Student Food Pantry users revealed that many of our students live on a food budget of just $50 to $80 per week.

“This limited budget often means students have to make tough choices, sacrificing nutrition and well-being to make ends meet, with international students especially at risk as they have no access to Commonwealth supported programs.

The Charles Sturt Foundation welcomes financial and in-kind donations to help meet growing student needs and every contribution makes a meaningful difference.”

The Charles Sturt Foundation is calling on the community to help ensure the Student Food Pantry can continue meeting the growing needs of students. Financial contributions and in-kind donations are welcome.
