The appointment is for a four-year term and was made by the NSW Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education, the Hon. Steve Whan MP.
Ms Leahy has a wealth of experience in governance, risk management and higher education. This includes an extensive background in internal auditing and finance, which is complemented by her academic contributions as a sessional lecturer in Charles Sturt’s School of Business for the past eight years.
Charles Sturt University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Renée Leon, welcomed Ms Leahy’s appointment.
“Susan’s experience in both the corporate and higher education sectors, along with her dedication to regional communities, fits perfectly with Charles Sturt’s mission,” Professor Leon said.
“We are delighted to welcome her to the University Council and look forward to her many valuable contributions.”
Currently Director of Risk and Assurance at Centium Consulting, Ms Leahy also serves as a non-executive Director of the Institute of Internal Auditors Australia and ADSSI, a not-for-profit organisation.
A long-time resident of regional NSW, Ms Leahy has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to community through work with organisations such as the House with No Steps and the Diocese of Broken Bay.
Minister Whan said he is “confident the Council will benefit greatly from Ms Leahy’s participation”.
“Susan Leahy brings valuable higher education experience to this role, as well as a deep understanding of the diverse student community that Charles Sturt University serves,” the Minister said.
“Charles Sturt University is a hugely important institution to students in regional NSW – developing well-rounded, qualified people who will help their communities thrive.”
Professor Leon said Ms Leahy would further enhance the invaluable skills and experience of the University Council.
“The composition of the University Council aligns with our values and our standing as Australia's leading regional university,” Professor Leon said.
"With Susan’s appointment, 11 members of the 17-member Council are women. We have Council members who are embedded in our regions, others who are First Nations leaders with deep connections to their communities, and others who have taught and worked in universities.
“These experiences and connections, coupled with the members' skills in management, risk, finance and other areas, are invaluable in ensuring the astute stewardship and strategic direction of the University.”
Professor Leon thanked Dr Robin Williams, whose four-year term concluded in June, for his service on the University Council.
