A sound approach to new studio at CSU

27 SEPTEMBER 2011

The installation of a new sound studio at CSU is exposing students to equipment usually only found in professional music, television and film post-production studios.

Third year animation and visual effects student Mr Rowan Karrer (seated) from Bathurst in the new studio with Technical Officer Mr Patrick McKenzie. The installation of a new sound studio at Charles Sturt University (CSU) is exposing students to equipment usually only found in professional music, television and film post-production studios.

The new 5.1 Surround Post-Production Sound Studio is equipped with the latest digital audio software from Avid Technology, Pro Tools 9 Native HD system and designed for surround sound mixing. It is one of the most advanced studios in regional Australia.

Lecturer in sound and multimedia in the School of Communication and Creative Industries at CSU in Wagga Wagga, Mr Damian Candusso designed the new studio. He is currently working on the film, Happy Feet 2.

“I designed the studio based on current industry post-production trends.  Just because Charles Sturt University is located outside the major cities is no reason to not meet industry standards,” said Mr Candusso.

“As many of our students are from regional Australia, this is often their first ever experience with a post-production sound studio.”

The facility will primarily be used by final year undergraduate and postgraduate students working on their major productions in Wagga Wagga.

It is important that all our students in animation and visual effects, design for theatre and television, and television production  courses have an appreciation and respect for high quality sound.

At the postgraduate level, Charles Sturt University also offers a Master of Arts Practice with specialisation in sound production and design.

“Never have university students had access to such professional industry equipment. The results are amazing, with their productions now screening nationally at events such as the Melbourne International Animation Festival.

“In addition, Charles Sturt University has also upgraded its location sound recorders to solid state setups with the quality professional Rode Microphones.”

Meanwhile, at TAFE NSW North Coast Institute, CSU has developed an articulation program from 2012 for a range of diplomas, including sound production, into the University’s Bachelor of Creative Industries.

Students receive two years credit for their TAFE diploma allowing them to complete the Bachelor of Creative Industries degree in 12 months full-time. This articulation program involves the North Coast Institutes’ Port Macquarie Campus. Read more here.
