An animation and visual effects student from Charles Sturt University (CSU) may be a month out from his graduation but he has already been named amongst the best in the industry at a national awards ceremony.
Mr Rowan Karrer, a final year Bachelor of Arts (Animation and Visual Effects) student, was nominated for an award from the Australian Screen Sound Guild (ASSG).
Mr Karrer, from Bathurst, received the nomination for the short film, Gob The Space Cadet, directed by fellow CSU student Ms Bridget Acreman. Mr Karrer was nominated for the Dorrough Loudness Meters Award for Best Achievement in Sound for an Animation Short Film or Program.
Lecturer in sound and multimedia at CSU, Mr Damian Candusso said, "Rowan was the only student in this category and was up against some of the best industry nominees.
“While he did not win the award the nomination was exciting for Rowan. He was also the first student to use the new purpose-built sound studio at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga.
“This nomination is testament not only to Rowan’s skills, but also our industry-aligned facilities.”
Gob The Space Cadet is Mr Karrer’s major work for the final year of his degree. The short children’s animation film is set to a poem.
It was written and directed by Ms Acreman.
Meanwhile, Mr Candusso was among the team to win the ASSG Award on Friday 4 November for the 3D animated film, Legend of the Guardians; The Owls of Ga’Hoole. The film won the Fairlight Award for Best Achievement in Sound for Film Sound Design. Mr Candusso was the film’s Sound Effects Editor.
The Bachelor of Arts (Animation and Visual Effects) is a three year program offered through the School of Communication and Creative Industries at CSU in Wagga Wagga. It is the only Bachelor degree dedicated to animation and visual effects in Australia.
