Two teams from Charles Sturt University’s (CSU) student advertising agency, Kajulu Communications, have taken out first and second places in a major national advertising competition.

The Kajulu Blue team won the International Advertising Association’s (IAA) Australia Chapter ‘Big Idea’ 2007 Marketing Communications Competition, with Kajulu Red in second place and the Boomerang team from Edith Cowan University third.

Acting Head of CSU's School of Communication, Mr Rod McCulloch, with the students from the Kajulu Blue and Kajulu Red teams which won 1st and 2nd place at the 2007 IAA 'Big Idea' competition.

CSU President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian Goulter, congratulated the students and their teachers saying “This is an example not just of a competition win but of the quality of our courses. It is proof of our commitment to education for the professions through courses developed in collaboration with industry. This success is also a clear demonstration of why CSU is the national University of inland Australia.”

Acting Head of the School of Communication and Advertising course coordinator, Mr Rod McCulloch, congratulated the students on their top placings. “This is an outstanding result for CSU and for these talented students. Considering the high calibre of competition from Australian universities, to take out first and second places is a tribute to the passion and dedication our students bring to their learning,” he said.

The IAA Australia Chapter allows the seven IAA accredited Australian universities to enter up to two student advertising teams from each university to compete each year in a national competition, with a brief to develop an integrated marketing communications campaign for a not-for-profit organisation. The 2007 client was Habitat for Humanity (H4H) Australia, an international organisation that builds housing in partnership with low income families.

The competition was judged by a panel of industry professionals, academics and representatives of the client organisation who praised the high standard of all entries. Mr Tony McClellan, Chairman of Habitat for Humanity, said “Some of the stuff done by these young people is terrific”, while H4H Board member Ms Gillian Burrows said “It was an inspiring task to judge these talented submissions. I would like to commend all the participants on their effort, enthusiasm and professionalism”.

CSU’s Kajulu Communications advertising teams have won the annual national competition four times since its inception in 2003, and have also won the international InterAd World Advertising Championship award three times since 1999.

Students in Kajulu Communications work on real client campaigns for regional, national and international companies, such as Yahoo!, Compaq Computers, Simpson Appliances, Estee Lauder and Sony, as well as for not-for-profit organisations such as the National Heart Foundation, Foodbank, Australian Red Cross, The Royal Flying Doctor Service, and now Habitat for Humanity Australia.
