An internship program with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) will benefit Charles Sturt University (CSU) broadcast journalism cadets who are training with the University’s National Radio News (NRN) service.
The ABC internship program was announced by ABC NewsRadio producer and on-air presenter Glen Bartholomew who was a special guest at the NRN tenth birthday celebrations on Friday 27 July. NRN is based on CSU’s Bathurst Campus.
The Vice-Chancellor of CSU, Professor Ian Goulter, said that, as a University committed to education for the professions, CSU prides itself on the employability of its graduates.
“This is due in large part to the special emphasis we place on practical placements and internships for our students,” he said.
“The University is delighted with the support of the ABC for the internship program for CSU student cadets with NRN.
“We continue to look forward to working in partnership with employers to provide practical opportunities during students’ study programs,” Professor Goulter said.
Mr Peter Hetherington, the manager of NRN, said that ten years of NRN operation marks a significant milestone in the organisation’s history, and the celebrations showcased the internship announcement which will create an ongoing relationship between NRN and ABC.
“From October 2007 three NRN cadets will be offered internships with ABC NewsRadio and ABC Radio National in Sydney,” he said.
“The ABC is the leading national broadcaster, so this really emphasises the high regard with which NRN is held within the broadcast news industry.
“These will be genuine working journalist positions with the appointees getting paid for their time, fast-tracked to on-air presenting, and given the pathway into full-time ABC work if they display the ability,” Mr Hetherington said.
