News Alert: Education Week – A love of learning

1 JANUARY 2003

Charles Sturt University (CSU) has a number of expert educators who can comment on NSW Education Week, Monday 14 – Sunday 20 May 2007.

Charles Sturt University (CSU) is a clear leader in the field of teacher education, according to CSU’s Associate Dean of Education, Professor Jo-Anne Reid.

“CSU’s Faculty of Education is innovative, forward-looking and committed to the preparation of high quality teachers for early-childhood, primary and secondary settings - particularly for schools disadvantaged by their location or socio-economic circumstances,” she said.

CSU’s Faculty of Education has four schools of education, on its Albury-Wodonga, Bathurst, Dubbo and Wagga Wagga campuses. Around 100 CSU Education academics are involved in research and lecturing in early childhood, primary and secondary education, vocational education and training as well as recreation and human movement programs.

NSW Education Week 2007: A love of learning will be held from Monday 14 – Sunday 20 May 2007. Many CSU educators are available to comment on Education Week. Possible stories include:

- Eight Charles Sturt University (CSU) Ontario teacher education students are currently in Wagga Wagga and Albury carrying out practice teaching in local schools. They will return to Ontario soon to graduate in June.

- NSW HSC Online is an initiative of CSU and the NSW Department of Education and Training. Since its inception in 1996 the website has won a NSW Premier’s Award and has been praised by students, parents and teachers alike. The website has attracted millions of ”hits” and this number grows annually, particularly each October as the annual HSC exams approach.

- CSU’s Dr Christopher Klopper is using innovative online learning to “bridge the gaps between research and teaching in music teacher education”. He says of the Music Teachers OZ website: “We have to think of creative modes of delivery that will engage the students with our subject. It is new and innovative for music education, because until now it was thought that music should be taught face to face”.

- The Education Dean’s Merit Award ceremony takes place at CSU Bathurst Campus on Thursday 17 May. Certificates will be awarded to students who completed outstanding teaching practicums in 2006, plus other prizes for continuing students.

- The Dead Bones Society, run by part time Charles Sturt University (CSU) tutor and literacy consultant Paul Stafford and mentored by male teacher education students from CSU, has won a 2007 Local Government Cultural Award. The workshops are aimed at gifted Year 9 to 12 boys in public and private schools.
