By Charles Sturt University Vice-Chancellor Professor Renée Leon:
Charles Sturt University stands in solidarity with Professor Stan Grant following his announcement he is stepping away from his media work at this time.
While Professor Grant has said “I don't take time out because of racism — I won't give racists the satisfaction”, the abuse he and his family have endured, especially in recent times, is appalling and wrong.
Through his work and with his voice, Professor Grant has tried to shine a light on the treatment of Australia’s First Nations people and to inspire and educate Australia towards reconciliation and equality.
His courage in advocating for these causes and speaking uncomfortable truths is laudable, and it should be a source of regret and shame when some try to use his words to stir division and hate. Racial abuse and intolerance have no place in our communities.
We are proud – now as always – to count Professor Grant as one of our own through his role as the Vice Chancellor's Chair of Australian-Indigenous Belonging and the Founding Director of Yindyamarra Nguluway.
