Executive Director of Human Resources, Mr Michael Knight, and lecturer Mr Bob Hill, from the Faculty of Education, were awarded their 30-year-service medals by CSU Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Ian Goulter. Eighteen other staff received their 20-year-service medals at the presentation ceremony.
Professor Goulter said, “Michael started as an assistant services officer in central records and deliveries, and then moved into student administration, middle management, HR – or personnel as it was then known – before taking on his current role in 2007.
“He was instrumental in computerising the Division of Human Resources records and processes from 1985 onwards and has taken this interest to the international stage as a conference speaker.”
Mr Knight said what inspired him to harness technology was seeing the ‘pram’, a cupboard which stored leave and service cards of staff.
“It was the only such record. I ensured the lot was photocopied and stored elsewhere as a back up. It prompted me to computerise all personnel records which took me from 1985 until 1990.”
The other 30-year-medal recipient, Mr Bob Hill, was a primary and high school teacher for just three years before becoming a lecturer at CSU’s predecessor institution, Mitchell College of Advanced Education, a role he held until he retired last week.
“Essentially, I’ve spent the last 30 years as a lecturer in social education working with beginning teachers. Every year the students are different. The role of education is becoming more and more important. Teachers make a powerful impact on developing children and through them upon the quality of all our lives.”
With considerable foresight, in 1990 Mr Hill helped form a committee to advise on environmental responsibility in University activities.
