The recipients of more than $300,000 in scholarships from the Mitchell Foundation Trust will be recognised during the Bathurst scholarship ceremony at Charles Sturt University on Friday 25 May.
Scholarships worth between $2,000 and $15,000 a year will be awarded to 104 new and continuing students studying at CSU's Bathurst Campus.
Thirteen new governors have joined the Mitchell Foundation Trust this year, including the Mitchell Emeritus Club, representing ex-staff members of the Bathurst campus.
Members of the Mitchell Emeritus Club continue to make an important contribution to the University. In recognition of this, the Charles Sturt Foundation has established two scholarships in their honour.
All scholarships, aside from the Equity Start-Up scholarships, are awarded on the basis of academic merit, leadership and contribution to the community.
Second year communication student Jayne Stinson, who will receive both the Gordon Bullock Memorial and the Mitchell Association of Student Councils scholarships, will be presenting a vote of thanks on behalf of scholars.
Ms Stinson is the Vice-President of the Student Representative Council, and was a 2001 NSW Young Australian of the Year finalist, recognising her work in advocating on youth issues, particularly mental health issues.
Associate Director of leading consulting firm KPMG and two-time Foundation scholar Susan Stewart-Loane will be guest speaker at the ceremony. Ms Stewart-Loane graduated with distinction from the Bachelor of Education (Secondary Mathematics) in 1988.
Head of the Bathurst Campus, Dr Peter Hodgson said the Mitchell Foundation Scholarships not only recognise and reward academic achievement, but also provide assistance to students from rural areas, as part of CSU's commitment to rural and regional areas.
"The Equity Start-Up scholarships provide assistance for talented students from rural and remote areas to undertake university studies through CSU," he said.
In addition, for the first time, a feature of the Mitchell Foundation Scholarship Ceremony will be performances by past and present scholars, recognising that for many, their talents are not only academic.
The ceremony begins at 3pm in the CSU Auditorium, until approximately 5pm.
