A Wagga Wagga woman has displayed an extraordinary level of generosity by bequeathing all her possessions and investments to benefit Riverina students at Charles Sturt University (CSU) in NSW.
Before her sudden death in July, 67 year old Valerie Cox instructed that her entire Estate, including a four bedroom, fully furnished house in the Wagga Wagga suburb of Lake Albert, a car, and cash be left to the CSU Wagga Wagga Campus.
The former nurse made the bequest on the condition that the money is used to financially assist Riverina students studying at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga, especially to help women and Koori students.
“The bequest is an extremely generous gift and a number of students from the Riverina will reap the benefit of Miss Cox’s kindness,” said Executive Director of CSU Financial Services Jim Hackett.
“The University is in the process of selling all the property and plans to use the proceeds from the Estate to build premium ensuite student accommodation on the Wagga Wagga Campus with the building to be named Valerie Cox Memorial Residence,” he said.
Scholarships will then be offered to a number of Riverina students that meet the criteria of Miss Cox’s will.
Solicitor and executor of the will, Charles Houen has described Valerie Cox as a very private lady, who simply wished to help people in the Riverina, particularly women and Aboriginal people.
“Miss Cox had a thirst for learning and, with no close relatives, I suggested she leave her Estate to CSU so she could assist in the education of others,” said Mr Houen. Miss Cox readily agreed to the generous bequest to the University.
Fitzpatrick’s Real Estate Agents have kindly offered to forgo the usual commission when the four bedroom house in Wagga Wagga is auctioned on a date to be fixed in October.
