Australia and New Zealand’s most senior police officers will be able to undertake higher degrees designed for their profession as part of a new agreement between Charles Sturt University and the Australian Institute of Police Management.

Australia and New Zealand’s most senior police officers will be able to undertake higher degrees designed for their profession as part of a new agreement between Charles Sturt University (CSU) and the Australian Institute of Police Management (AIPM).

The AIPM, responsible for strategic management and leadership development among senior officers within Australian and New Zealand police services will sign an agreement with CSU on Monday 25 November, which further increases the level of services available to police in all jurisdictions.

The agreement will enable AIPM graduates to receive recognition of prior study when studying for the Masters in Public Administration, offered through CSU’s Australian Graduate School of Policing (AGSP) at Manly.

CSU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian Goulter said the agreement further establishes its lead in policing education, as it is already the provider of the NSW Police recruit education program.

“Offering education to the full spectrum of our police services – from new recruits to those at the highest levels, demonstrates the increased expectations society has of modern police officers.

“Police management is central to success in modern policing and this agreement with the AIPM enables CSU to work with all policing jurisdictions, ensuring we meet professional needs, while maintaining academic standards,” Professor Goulter said.

AIPM Executive Director, Dr Jim Hann said the agreement will provide further professionalisation of their graduates.

“We aim to enhance the leadership and management of our police services through the courses we offer, however, access to the Master of Public Policy and Administration, offered through Charles Sturt University’s Graduate School of Policing (AGSP) will greatly benefit our graduates.

“Our graduates will receive recognition of prior learning if they enrol in the AGSP Masters degree. We are fulfilling our aim of building pathways to University, that will meet the needs of our graduates, all senior managers, as well as enhance the Australasian policing services,” Dr Hann said.

A short ceremony commencing at 11.30am on Monday 25 November at the Australian Institute of Police Management, Collins Beach Road, Manly, will mark the agreement.
