Mayor of Bathurst Councillor Ian Macintosh has been appointed to the position of Deputy Chancellor of Charles Sturt University.

Vice-Chancellor Ian Goulter in announcing the appointment said Cr Macintosh’s skills and background will add to the strength of the University through its governing body the University Council.

“Cr Macintosh has made a major contribution to both the NSW Central West and the University Council during his time in Bathurst. He brings a wealth of knowledge on regional development and will help us better focus on our relationship with our local communities.

“I consider it a very exciting prospect to be involved with CSU,” Cr Macintosh said. “In my time in Bathurst, I have watched it grow into one of, if not the leading regional university in Australia. I’m looking forward to seeing the university develop further.”

Before moving to Bathurst in 1991, Cr Macintosh operated a Canberra-based, national government relations and marketing business and was a fellow of the Public Relations Institute of Australia.

Becoming Mayor of Bathurst in 1995, he spent six years as a member of the Central West Regional Development Board, two years as chair of the Country Mayor’s Association. He has been a member of the Local Government Association Executive and the NSW Premier’s Regional Investment Taskforce.

Last year he was appointed by the Federal Government to a nation Panel of Eminent Persons to review the law of negligence which resulted in the production of Justice Ipp’s report.

Cr Macintosh has a Bachelor of Arts degree from ANU. He won a Nuffield Farming Scholarship in 1965 and an Anzac Fellowship in 1969. A past president of the Australian Nuffield Farming Scholars Association, he has served on various business boards and community committees in Canberra and Bathurst.

In his new role, Cr Macintosh will chair meetings of the University Council as well as officiate at graduations and other ceremonies when University Chancellor Lawrence Willet AO is unable to attend.
