1 JANUARY 2003

CSU will celebrate the achievements of more than 650 graduates at ceremonies in Sydney next week.

Charles Sturt University (CSU) will celebrate the achievements of more than 650 graduates at ceremonies in Sydney next week.

The three ceremonies on Monday 29 and Tuesday 30 August 2016 at Rosehill Racecourse will see undergraduate and post graduate degrees awarded, including five PhDs.

CSU will also recognise the contributions of Mr Lars Karlsson to customs compliance management and professional practice by awarding him an honorary doctorate on Monday 29 August.

With a career spanning more than 30 years in customs and international trade policy, Mr Karlsson developed the world's first partnership program between customs and the trading community, a program that's now being adopted by more than 160 countries.

He also founded the formal link between the World Customs Organisation and academia, leading to the international accreditation of customs degree programs.

Monday 29 August 3:30pm

The Occasional Address will be delivered by Mr Lars Karlsson (pictured). The title of Doctor of Education (honoris causa) will also be conferred on Mr Karlsson for his 'significant contribution to the public good through his outstanding input and influence in the professional practice of customs education and capacity building.'

More than 230 graduates from CSU's Faculty of Arts will be presented with their awards. Two PhDs will be awarded.

Dr Richard Shortt will be awarded his PhD examining the inter-organisational relationships occurring between intelligence and law enforcement agencies in three "intermediate capacity" countries-Denmark, Finland and New Zealand.  The policy benchmarks developed as part of this research could benefit nations wanting to increase their effective inter-agency engagement in a time of heightened transnational criminality.

Tuesday 30 August 10:30am

The Occasional Address will be delivered by CSU Pro Chancellor Dr Angelos Frangopoulos, who is also the CEO and Managing Editor of Australian News Channel (Sky News).

More than 330 graduates from CSU's Faculty of Business will be presented with their awards.

Dr Mariya Yesseleva-Pionka will be awarded her PhD which examines Australian small and medium-sized enterprises and their access to external debt finance. The research found legal form and use of financial performance measures were important factors in facilitating access to debt funding.

Tuesday 30 August 3:30pm

The Occasional Address will be delivered by CSU Deputy Chancellor, Mr Peter Hayes AM.

More than 100 graduates from CSU's Faculty of Science and 150 graduates from the Faculty of Education will receive their awards. Two PhDs will be awarded.

The findings of Dr Alistair Murphy's PhD research will provide new information for high performance tennis players and their coaches about training intensity in preparation for tournaments.

Ms Ashleigh Ryman will be awarded a Graduate Diploma in Midwifery and is passionate about her chosen career.

"Never did I believe I'd have learnt so much in a single year," she said. "As I reflect on day one to now, I smile and am thankful for all the staff, women and lecturers who have helped shape me into the midwife I am today.  I look forward to continuing my practice and to evolving even more."
