CSU launches new book on South Campus

16 DECEMBER 2003

The story of South Campus at CSU in Wagga Wagga will be revealed during a book launch in Wagga Wagga on Thursday 18 December.

The story of South Campus at Charles Sturt University (CSU) in Wagga Wagga will be revealed during a book launch in Wagga Wagga on Thursday 18 December.

The launch of South Campus – A history coincides with a public information session from 6pm on upcoming works and future planning for the University-owned site.

Mr Stephen Butt, Executive Director of the CSU Division of Facilities Management, said, "In the coming weeks 14 redundant buildings at South Campus will be demolished.

"These buildings have served their purpose for Charles Sturt University and are past preserving.

"The demolition work is the start of a long process of disposing of South Campus."

Capturing a definitive history of South Campus was a vital part of the University's strategic disposal plan.

South Campus – A history is by local historian Dr Nancy Blacklow, with the assistance of CSU Regional Archives manager Mr Wayne Doubleday.

The 44-page book captures the diverse history of South Campus, from its early days as a Royal Australian Air Force hospital in the 1940s to its transition to the Wagga Wagga Teachers' College in 1947, and eventual consolidation to the Riverina College of Advanced Education (RCAE) in 1972.

In 1980, the RCAE was relocated to Boorooma, the current home of CSU. The move signalled the end of teaching activities at South Campus.

Since the departure of the College, South Campus has been used for a number of purposes. It is currently the site of CSU Regional Archives, the CSU Kay Hull Veterinary Teaching Hospital, the Riverina Conservatorium of Music, and, until 2013, student accommodation.

The Archives, Veterinary Hospital and Conservatorium will remain at South Campus.

In 2015, Saint Mary MacKillop Colleges will be welcomed as new tenants.

More information on South Campus is available here.

The South Campus community information session and book launch will be held from 6pm to 7pm on Thursday 18 December in the Bannister Room, Riverina Conservatorium of Music, College Avenue, Wagga Wagga.
