Charles Sturt University has made an offer of 13.1 per cent salary increase over three years to its academic staff.

Charles Sturt University has made an offer of 13.1 per cent salary increase over three years to its academic staff.

In making this offer, CSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Cliff Blake has indicated that it recognises the significant contribution made by academic staff to the University during the past few years.

"Negotiations between the University and the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) have been conducted on a very constructive basis with a view to both parties achieving their principal threshold issues," Professor Blake said

President of the CSU Branch of the NTEU, Mary Callaway said, "We think that this is a reasonable offer in response to our claim and one we believe our members will accept.

"The negotiations for a new enterprise agreement with academic staff, although intensive and robust, have nevertheless been amicable. Our intention has been to achieve a package of outcomes that benefit academic staff in terms of their contribution and commitment to CSU," Ms Callaway said.

Professor Blake said the quantum of the salary offer made by CSU was determined after detailed analyses of its present financial position and projected financial commitments over the next three years.

"This salary offer is financially responsible and it will enable the University to remain competitive and to continue to attract and retain academic staff of high quality," Professor Blake said.

"To remain competitive CSU must continue to accelerate its generation of income from non-government sources, especially from its various overseas initiatives. In tandem with this, we have to be responsive to new markets and opportunities at home and abroad. I am confident that the new enterprise agreement will allow the University to achieve these goals and, at the same time, provide ongoing security and recognition for our academic staff," he said.

Included in CSU's offer to academic staff are a range of measures including salary packaging, maintenance of superannuation arrangements, staff development provisions and the implementation of principles and procedures associated with workload allocations for academic staff.

It is expected, that following the signing off on the agreement by the University and the Union, academic staff will vote on its acceptance within the next few weeks.
