CSU's Dr Richard TaffeFrom 2012, students from NSW mid-north coast who wish to study at Charles Sturt University (CSU), but who do not meet the entry criteria, or who require further preparation, will be able to enrol in the University’s Pathways Program in conjunction with TAFE NSW North Coast Institute.

Dr Richard Taffe, course director for the CSU Diploma of General Studies, said, “Some students need a second chance to participate in higher education. The University’s Pathways Program and the Diploma of General Studies is creating this opportunity.

“The Pathways Program offers students a carefully supported program that builds their academic skills and confidence, and offers a clear pathway into university.

“Charles Sturt University works closely with regional TAFE partners to deliver this course. In 2011, the Faculty of Education successfully extended course delivery to three locations, and set the foundation for the further expansion.”

The Diploma of General Studies (formerly called the University Certificate in General Studies) is a combination of eight subjects studied over two 17-week sessions which provide students with a solid preparation for university study. The equivalent of four subjects is drawn from the TAFE Certificate IV in Further Education (or Tertiary Preparation Certificate), and four from CSU's Bachelor level subjects.

“On successful completion of the Pathways Program, students are guaranteed entry into most Charles Sturt University courses,” Dr Taffe said. “Of the 56 students who commenced the Pathways Program in 2011, it is expected that around 75 per cent will go on to enrol in courses at the University in 2012.

“The Faculty of Education is greatly encouraged by the feedback it receives from students who consistently report the value of the support they receive from both the TAFE teachers and the University staff involved in course delivery. Apart from gaining or consolidating skills such as essay writing and referencing, the students feel the Pathways Program has given them the foundation they needed to succeed at university.”

Discussions are underway to further develop this course so that it can be offered by flexible delivery to other, more remote locations.
