Graduation at Charles Sturt University's Bathurst Campus this year will be a history making event with the completion of the new gymnasium and auditorium building, the first permanent home in the history of the Campus for such ceremonies.

In excess of $2 million has been spent on the design, reconstruction and equipment, including an Olympic standard basketball court and second court which create auditorium space to seat 800 people, a stage featuring performance standard lighting and sound equipment, new teaching rooms, a dance studio and a fully fitted gymnasium with state-of-the-art equipment.

A number of special features have been included in the building design to add to its ceremonial atmosphere. These include the installation of a custom built Makin organ made in London and stained glass windows, depicting images of the history of the Bathurst Campus and the crests of the four cities where the University's campuses are located.

CSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Cliff Blake said the building would provide a versatile space for university and community events adding to the culture of the campus and the City.

"The gymnasium auditorium has been designed to be very much a multi-purpose facility where events such a graduations, organ recitals or basketball games are equally at home.

"Careful planning has seen our architects use the best in sound proofing materials and a clever use of space that allows a number of separate activities to be going on at the same time."

World class organ makers from Makin were involved in the auditorium design with material in the ceiling and around the stage built in to offer the best acoustic sound possible for the large space.
