The push to recruit more police officers to the NSW Police Service gives opportunities for a diverse range of people interested in a policing career, according to Charles Sturt University's Associate Professor Tracey Green.

Professor Green, who heads the Diploma of Policing Practice course taught by CSU at the NSW Police Academy at Goulburn, said the service is striving to increase the number of recruits from a wide range of backgrounds.

"The NSW Police Service, as it moves into the next century, needs to be representative of the community it serves," she said.

As part of a statewide recruiting campaign, the first of three Police Career Days coordinated by CSU in conjunction with NSW Police begins this weekend in Newcastle.

"We're seeking to attract recruits of a high standard to ensure the police officers of the future provide a professional service which meets the needs of the community," Professor Green said.

"We're looking for people with life experiences and from a range of backgrounds and ages who would enjoy the challenge of a rewarding career.

"Policing is not an easy option, but offers the opportunity to be involved in a different experience every day."

Professor Green added that the Diploma of Policing Practice is constantly evolving to ensure that it meets the needs of the police service and the changing needs of the community.

"The course is delivered jointly by the Police Service and CSU, with a balance between practice and theory, to ensure recruits are adequately prepared to become professional police officers."
