Top title for retiring campus leader

Retiring Head of Charles Sturt University's Albury-Wodonga Campus, Professor Bryan Rothwell, has been awarded the title of Emeritus Professor from the University Council.

Retiring Head of Charles Sturt University's Albury-Wodonga Campus, Professor Bryan Rothwell, has been awarded the title of Emeritus Professor from the University Council, CSU's peak governing body, in recognition of his outstanding services to the University.

Professor Rothwell was recognised for over 14 years as a senior executive with CSU and its predecessor institutions. The last nine years of service were as Head of the Albury-Wodonga Campus and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University.

"Professor Rothwell has overseen the rapid growth of the Albury-Wodonga Campus, from a small group of former residential buildings in central Albury to the award-winning environmentally sensitive campus at Thurgoona and the rapidly expanding School of Community Health on the Albury city site," said CSU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Cliff Blake.

Professor Rothwell retires from CSU at the end of 1999. He will be replaced as Head of Campus by CSU's Dean of Health Studies, Professor David Battersby, who will move to Albury from Wagga Wagga to take up his position early in 2000.

The University Council agreed to confer Professor Rothwell's award during its meeting last Friday 8 October on the Albury-Wodonga Campus, where representatives of CSU's four main campuses gathered to discuss the University's recent developments, including the Thurgoona site.

"Albury City Council inspectors looked over the new teaching and administration buildings last week and complimented the University on the unique architecture and innovative water management systems used on the site," Professor Blake said.

"CSU is now considering the next stage at Thurgoona - a new Student Association building that will complement the existing teaching facilities and administrative buildings constructed using rammed earth and recycled timber.

"The construction will be in addition to the $23 million that Charles Sturt University has invested in the Thurgoona Campus since 1995."

The new facilities at Thurgoona, which include a 200-seat lecture theatre, five additional teaching and tutorial rooms and accommodation for 32 students, are due to be opened early next year by the NSW Minister of Education and Training, The Hon. John Aquilina.
