CSU student flies high, securing gold at World Championships

CSU student Ms Laura Peel has won gold at the FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships in Kreischberg, Austria.

Laura Peel flies high at World ChampionshipsCharles Sturt University (CSU) student Ms  Laura Peel has won gold at the FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships in Kreischberg, Austria.

The Bachelor of Health Science (Food and Nutrition) student's win in the early hours of Friday 16 January 2015 made her only the fourth Australian woman to win an aerial skiing World Championships title.

The win was Ms Peel's first major title and was secured after she was able to land a triple twisting double somersault for the first time under competition conditions.

"I was a little nervous about the jump selection but I knew that if I wanted to stand on the podium, I knew that was what I had to do," Ms Peel said in an interview with the Australian Olympic Committee.

"I just wanted to get through to the top six but to come away with the win is unbelievable.

"I am so happy to be the World Champion. I can't believe it."

Ms Peel is one of 28 elite athlete studying at CSU. She placed seventh at the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games in the women's Aerials.
