New physiotherapy clinic opens for Albury community

2 MARCH 2015

CSU and Flex Out Physiotherapy will open a new physiotherapy clinic at CSU in Albury-Wodonga, boosting access to health services for local residents.

Health and Wellness ClinicCharles Sturt University (CSU) and Flex Out Physiotherapy have opened a new physiotherapy clinic at CSU in Albury-Wodonga, boosting access to health services for local residents.

The new clinic is open from today and will become part of the CSU School of Community Health's Community Engagement and Wellness Centre (CEW) located in Thurgoona.

Head of the School of Community Health Associate Professor Megan Smith said the clinic will make it easier for residents to access physiotherapy services in a developing area of Albury/Wodonga.

"The Charles Sturt University and Flex Out physiotherapy clinic will be the first physiotherapy service offered in Thurgoona; a rapidly expanding suburb with growing need for health services," she said.

"The clinic will supplement the well establish podiatry services already offered at the Community Engagement and Wellness Centre. The Centre is a state-of-the-art, fully functional health clinic offering its clients access to gym facilities and a biomechanics and movement assessment lab."

As well as providing high quality and accessible care for local residents, the clinic will act as a training centre for CSU Bachelor of Physiotherapy students.

"The physiotherapy clinic will be a student led clinic similar to the existing podiatry service," Associate Professor Smith said.

"Students will be actively involved in the assessment and treatment of clients and will work under the supervision of qualified physiotherapists at all times. The knowledge and experience the students will gain from working closely with patients in a community clinic environment is invaluable to their education.

"Training health students in regional and rural communities is one of the most effective ways to retain health workers in those communities. More than 75 per cent of Charles Sturt University health graduates of rural origin return to rural areas to practice."

Director and Physiotherapist at Flex Out Physiotherapy Mrs Rebecca Piazza agreed that the clinic would help to recruit more health practitioners to Albury/Wodonga.

"The clinic will provide Flex Out with an opportunity to connect with students from very early on in their careers and help to showcase the challenging and rewarding nature of working in regional areas," she said.

"We have a number of Charles Sturt University physiotherapy graduates on staff already and we are looking forward to supporting and mentoring the next generation of regional physiotherapists, whilst also expanding our professional services to the Thurgoona area."

"We will be able to treat clients in all areas of physiotherapy including sports injuries, aches and pains, rehabilitation and falls prevention."

The clinic is open from today, Monday 2 March. To enquire about services or to make an appointment please phone the Community Engagement and Wellness Centre on 02 6051 9299.
