Charles Sturt University (CSU) Associate Professor Maree Simpson has welcomed the decision of four CSU graduates to stand for election on the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia NSW Branch committee.
Professor Simpson, CSU's pharmacy discipline leader, and said the four graduates showed the future of the profession was in good hands.
"These four graduates, all women, are early career pharmacists taking stands for issues in which they believe," she said.
"Charles Sturt University was the first regional university to offer a pharmacy course, and it is still innovative in a number of ways.
"Our students are able to study specialist topics such as rural health, vaccination training, mental health first aid and business management.
"We encourage all our students to look for ways they can participate in their local community and in the wider profession. I think the young women standing for election in NSW are setting an excellent example."
The four candidates are Ms Anna Barwick, currently an academic with the University of New England, Ms Seray Goktekin, Ms Elise McGilchrist and Ms Krist West.
Ms West graduated from CSU in Wagga Wagga and now practices in Mudgee, in rural NSW.
"As a rural pharmacist I see that my community may not have the largest population, but it deserves the same access to quality healthcare," she said.
"And, as a pharmacist, I want to continue to be part of an industry striving to improve the health of all Australians."
Ms McGilchrist graduated from CSU in Orange and is now a community pharmacy owner on the NSW Central Coast. She said she wanted to make a positive impact on her chosen profession.
"I am passionate about community health and want to ensure our profession remains relevant and effective," she said.
Professor Simpson, from the School of Biomedical Sciences at CSU in Orange said, regardless of the eventual outcome of the ballot, she was pleased to see CSU graduates seeking to increase their own contribution, and that of the profession, to community and rural healthcare.
"I'd like to congratulate each of these candidates for nominating and wish them well in the ballot," she said.
"They all stood out as particularly motivated and talented students, and I'm confident they will continue into successful and rewarding careers in the future."
