Aboriginal students studying for their degree in community and public health through Charles Sturt University will benefit from new indigenous health resources purchased for the CSU campus in Dubbo with a $2 500 grant from Dubbo RSL Club.

On Monday 14 May, 35 Aboriginal students currently studying in the degree program will meet with Dubbo RSL Directors to formally launch the new collection of academic books.

The course, which has been developed by CSU in consultation with health services and Aboriginal communities, is now in its third year.

It is unique in the fact it is specifically designed for Aboriginal health workers, and each component has been tailored to meet the needs of Aboriginal people. The course's success to date has resulted in the introduction of a new Masters in Indigenous Health, which will have its first intake of students next year.

Students enrolled in the course study by distance education and will be in Dubbo for their residential school component for the week Monday 14 to Friday 18 May.

Dubbo RSL Club General Manager Geoffrey Holland said the club's contribution recognised the importance of smaller districts to the region as a whole.

"When these students visit Dubbo for their residential school they can use this information and take back their learning to their districts for the benefit of their own communities," Mr Holland said.

"Keeping small communities alive and well, as made possible through the Community and Public Health Degree, is essential to the health of the region as a whole.

"If the region is strong, Dubbo is strong," Mr Holland said.

The collection of books will also be made available to indigenous health professionals working in the Dubbo community.

The launch will take place at the Dubbo Campus, Windsor Parade, Dubbo at 12.30pm.
