Students at Charles Sturt University in 2027 can apply for more than $11 million in scholarships and grants to assist with the costs of their studies.

Scholarships assist students to cover the cost of essential university expenses, including accommodation, textbooks, work placements and travel.

Cost-of-living pressures and study costs have become significant contributors to students withdrawing from their university courses in Australia.

According to a study by the Australian Centre for Student Equity and Success, one in three Australian university students experience financial insecurity. Financial stress is linked to increased dropout rates, lower academic performance and adverse mental health outcomes.

“No student should have to give up their university dream because they can't afford to study," Vice-Chancellor of Charles Sturt University Professor Renée Leon said.

"These scholarships help remove financial barriers and give students the support they need to complete their studies and build a better future for themselves and their communities.”

Scholarship eligibility is not based solely on grades or level of hardship. Scholarships are available for First Nations students, first-in-family students, regional and rural students and those who come from TAFE.

Charles Sturt's Foundation scholarships are made possible by the generous donations of individuals, community groups and businesses.

“We are grateful to all our donors for believing in students’ ambitions and supporting them through their higher education journey,” Professor Leon said.

One of the scholarships on offer is the Lam Medical Scholarship, aimed at increasing the number of doctors practicing in regional NSW. The largest individual scholarship in Charles Sturt’s history, valued at up to $225,000, was donated by Mr Victor Lam and his wife, Anita.

Other Foundation scholarships on offer include:

Non-Foundation and equity grants are also on offer through the University and via government funding throughout the year.

A list of available scholarships and how to apply is currently available online here. Applications are open until January or February 2027, depending on the scholarship.
