Support for the Murray Darling Medical School, proposed by Charles Sturt University and La Trobe University, has reached 50,000 people on Facebook.
Mrs Audrey Hardman, OAM, Chair of the Murray Darling Medical School Community Consultative Committee, thanked the people who have signed up as supporters of the Murray Darling Medical School, and the 18,000 that have taken the time to sign the Doctors for the Bush petition.
The milestone in support follows a National Party of Australia commitment to establish the Murray Darling Medical School if they form government after this weekend’s federal election.
"It's amazing how many Australians have taken the time to show their support, and to send a message to all the major parties that the current approach to training doctors for the bush is simply not good enough" Mrs Hardman said.
"This support was critical to winning the full commitment of the Nationals, as well as the support of so many other candidates for election including Angus Taylor (Liberal Candidate for Hume), Dr Jess Jennings (ALP Candidate for Calare) and Greg Bickley (Liberal Candidate for Bendigo).
"Our thanks go out to everyone who has taken the time to show their support on Facebook, and to sign the petition. We will deliver the petition to the Prime Minister after the election.
"There are now at least 50,000 Australians who will be waiting to toast our new Murray Darling Medical School when it opens in the first term of an Abbott and Truss Government if they are elected on Saturday."
