A Charles Sturt University (CSU) academic has been appointed to a key representative position for the dentistry profession.

Senior Lecturer in the CSU School of Dentistry and Health Sciences Dr Sabrina Manickam has been named President of the NSW branch of the Australian Dental Association (ADA NSW).

"I welcome this chance to represent and advocate for my profession,"

"I aim to ensure patients know we are a caring and dedicated profession who strive for best practice and excellence," Dr Manickam said.

"I want to support my colleagues to ensure they achieve their goals but also enjoy the journey. I also strive to lead by example and hope that at the end of my time as ADA NSW President I have contributed positively and considerately.

"On a personal note, I have served with ADA NSW since 1995 and being elected as President is an honour and privilege. I am humbled by the support and confidence my colleagues have in me."

Among the key issues identified by the CSU academic for the ADA NSW is its involvement and engagement with the community and government and non-government organisations which share a common vision.

"We also need to look at the challenges of linking oral health to general health and ensuring that we do not manage in isolation.

"In addition, there will be issues around funding and workforce with the oversupply of dentists requiring immediate attention and action."

CSU offers a five-year Bachelor of Dental Science degree in Orange. It also has Dental and Oral Health Clinics in Albury-Wodonga, Bathurst, Dubbo, Orange and Wagga Wagga.

Dr Manickam is a Senior Lecturer in the areas of professionalism and ethics. She prepares the dental science students for pre-clinical and clinical practice.

"It's always been a joy to teach," Dr Manickam said.

"There is something very special about contributing to dental education. As dentists, we contribute to improving standards, imparting knowledge and striving for the best for patients and profession; qualities which embody professionalism and ethics."
