A medical science student at Charles Sturt University (CSU) has been awarded a Trans-Tasman scholarship which honours the inventor and pioneer of the Cochlear implant, Professor Graeme Clark.

Ms Susan Lindrud, from Canberra, has won the 2015 Graeme Clark Scholarship from Cochlear Limited.

The annual scholarship aims to assist recipients of Cochlear hearing solutions, like Ms Lindrud, to reach their goals through university study.

Through CSU online, Ms Lindrud is studying a Bachelor of Medical Science (Pathology) in the University's School of Biomedical Sciences.

After contracting measles at a young age, Ms Lindrud suffered chronic otitis, which resulted in hearing loss.

Ms Lindrud said, "I am thrilled to receive this scholarship as it will assist me in continuing my higher education."

Despite her hearing impairment, Ms Lindrud graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Buea in Cameroon.

In 2010 Ms Lindrud received a Cochlear™ Baha® bone conduction implant.

Then at the age of 24, Ms Lindrud did a Masters in International Museum Studies at the Goteborg University in Sweden between 2002 and 2004.

Now nearing the end of her CSU medical science degree, Ms Lindrud is hoping to continue her studies and fulfil a dream to do medicine next year.

In congratulating their student, CSU lecturers Dr Lucy Webster and Dr Phillip Bwititi said, "It is not surprising that Susan was awarded this scholarship.

"She is hard working and constantly a high achiever who shows immense determination and maturity despite the challenges she faces.

"The medical science degree she is completing is world recognised and our pathology stream is also accredited with Australian Institute of Medical Scientists hence opens avenues for  postgraduate studies such as doctorates as well as other professions."

The University's Bachelor of Medical Science is offered at CSU in Wagga Wagga or through CSU online. Read more here.

The Graeme Clark Scholarship is awarded to residents of Australia and NZ each year. It includes financial assistance of $5 000 a year for a three-year undergraduate degree. Read more here.
