Charles Sturt University invites the community to a powerful online event featuring The Hon. Dr. Michael Kirby, AC, CMG, in celebration of National Coming Out Day.
Dr Kirby, a former Justice of the High Court of Australia and one of Australia’s most respected legal minds and human rights advocates, will share his personal coming out journey in an inspiring conversation that highlights courage, resilience and the importance of belonging.
His story has helped shape national conversations around equality and inclusion and this event promises to be a moving and memorable experience.
Research conducted in 2024 by Charles Sturt’s Dr Clifford Lewis and Professor Suzanne McLaren through the Australian Regional Rainbow Survey confirms that LGBTIQA+ people living in rural areas experience significantly higher levels of discrimination and lower feelings of belonging compared to their metropolitan counterparts.
The Michael Kirby Empowerment Scholarship, a new initiative developed by Charles Sturt University, the Charles Sturt Foundation and the Ally Network, will also be launched at this week’s online webinar.
The scholarship will support LGBTQIA+ students in regional Australia, helping them overcome barriers and thrive.
Every dollar raised from the event’s live fundraising drive will go directly to the scholarship fund.
The online webinar will be held on National Coming Out Day at 10am on Thursday 16 October. Registrations for the event must be made online. People can also contribute to the scholarship fund by making an online donation.
