Charles Sturt University (CSU) has signalled its commitment to the development of a premier equine precinct at the University by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Wagga Wagga City Council.

Mr Lindner said it will build on existing infrastructure at the CSU Equine Centre, including the 3 000 square metre indoor arena and the highly acclaimed cross-country track designed by Captain Mark Phillips.
“This will create a consolidated premier site in southern NSW for the benefit of all equine sports and leisure users,” he said. “It’s another example of the positive linkages between the University and the community of Wagga Wagga.”
Access to the expertise and modern facilities at CSU’s School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences is also an advantage and the Head of School, Professor Nick Sangster has welcomed the MOU.
“This is a critical step and opens the opportunity for the development of a top class facility in Wagga Wagga with the potential to attract riders of all disciplines from NSW and interstate.
“Linking the facility to an educational institution is a win-win,” he said. “The Council gains from the backing and expertise of the University and our students will gain skills in management of equine facilities and community engagement.”
Professor Sangster said since the Council decision to support development of the Centre at the CSU site both parties have been busy planning the new facilities.
“A joint management committee including members of the equestrian community has been formed, met several times and staff roles have been identified,” he said. “Charles Sturt University has committed staff time specifically to work on the layout and design and also to consult with the equestrian industry to ensure the facility will meet their needs.”
CSU staff members have also visited the Sydney International Equestrian Centre, the Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre at Tamworth along with regional facilities in Albury and Camden.
“The MOU allows planning to move up a gear,” Professor Sangster said. “In the near future there will be moves to improve access to existing University facilities. This will be followed by a staged development of competition and training facilities, including increasing the seating capacity for the indoor arena and building a practice arena.”
