Professor Ian Goulter, Vice-Chancellor and President of Charles Sturt University (CSU), congratulated CSU staff, associates and alumni who were selected to attend the Australia 2020 Summit being conducted by the Rudd Government on 19 and 20 April in Canberra.“The large number of CSU staff, associates and alumni who have been asked by the Government to contribute to the Summit recognises the high quality of the research and teaching being undertaken by CSU, particularly in the areas of water management, sustainable agriculture and inland communities”.
Professor Shahbaz Khan was appointed to the group examining population, sustainability, climate change and water. As Director of the CSU/UNESCO International Centre of Water for Food Security, Professor Khan is an internationally recognised specialist in hydrology and water management. He has recently been appointed to head the UNESCO Hydrology for Environment, Life and Society program in Paris.
Professor Deidre Lemerle and Professor Margaret Alston have been appointed to the future directions for rural industries and communities group. Professor Lemerle is Director of CSU’s EH Graham Centre for Agricultural Innovation and a leader in sustainable agricultural research. Professor Margaret Alston is a Professor of Social Science in the CSU Faculty of Arts and a nationally recognised researcher in the area rural communities.
The Vice-Chancellor also congratulated CSU associates and alumni for being selected to attend the Summit:

- Dr Wendy Craik (CEO of the Murray Darling Basin Commission and member of the Advisory Board of the CSU Institute for Land, Water and Society)
- Mr Andrew Denton (ABC broadcaster and CSU School of Communication graduate)
- Dr Roger Fletcher (Chairman, Fletcher International Exports Pty Ltd and CSU Honorary Doctor of Business)
- Dr Geoff Dixon (CEO of QANTAS and CSU Honorary Doctor of Business)
- Ms Cathy McGowan (rural communities consultatnt and member of the Advisory Board of the CSU Institute for Land, Water and Society).
CSU was also pleased to be asked to host the Australia 2020 Regional Summit in Bathurst on 5 April 2008 in the lead up to the national Summit.
“Universities are a place for the exploration and extension of knowledge,” Professor Goulter said. “The Rudd Government has stated a strong commitment to engaging with new thinking around the challenges and opportunities confronting inland Australia and the nation into the future.
“Finding practical solutions is what CSU does every day through its teaching and research, and we are pleased as a University to assist our communities to engage in this process at the request of the Government and Member for Macquarie, The Hon. Bob Debus, MP.”
The 2020 Regional Summit will provide an opportunity for everyday inland Australians to contribute to the identification of the challenges and opportunities for the future. Outcomes of the 2020 Regional Summit will be forwarded to the National Summit and form part of the outcomes of this Commonwealth initiative.
