Charles Sturt University (CSU) student Mr Jonathon Watson will be one of only 6 000 Australians to attend commemorations at Anzac Cove, Gallipoli on 25 April 2015.
The Bachelor of Communication (Advertising) / Bachelor of Business (Marketing) student is the great great grandson of Victoria Cross recipient Colonel Alfred Heathcote and was selected from a ballot of over 42 000 Australians to attend the commemorations marking the 100th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli.
"My whole family entered the ballot with the hope that one of us would be successful," Mr Watson said.
"The family has connections to World War I and World War II. The 100th anniversary is a once in a lifetime opportunity, with the ceremony at Gallipoli being especially important this year."
Mr Watson will attend the commemorations with his sister Rachael and believes youth representation at such events is important for the longevity of the Anzac spirit.
"It is important for young Australians to get involved and stay connected to Anzac commemorations as history lives on through the younger generations," Mr Watson said.
"The Anzac spirit is an essential part of Australian history and culture and it is imperative that the knowledge of the sacrifice lives on."
Prior to arriving in Gallipoli, Mr Watson will visit the Western Front at Ypres in Belgium, the Flanders Fields Museum and will attend a wreath laying ceremony at the Menin Gate where he will deliver a letter from the Young and District Family History Group. The letter lists the names of soldiers who served from the Young district and will also be taken to Anzac Cove.
"I hope that by attending the ceremony my understanding of the sacrifice that Australian soldiers made will be enhanced," Mr Watson said.
"The campaign 100 years ago marked a turning point in the Nation's identity. Attending the event will allow for reflection and commemoration of all Australian soldiers that have served and to be thankful for the Australia that we live in today."
Mr Watson currently studies at CSU Bathurst. More information about Anzac Day 2015 is available from the Department of Veterans' Affairs.
