- Charles Sturt University researchers have been included on a World’s Top 2% Scientists list
- The list indicates researchers’ exceptional contributions to the global scientific community and their expertise in their respective fields
- The list represents approximately two per cent of all scientists worldwide whose work has had a significant impact across various scientific disciplines
More than 30 current Charles Sturt University researchers have been listed among the world’s leading scientists.
The 36 researchers from all the University’s faculties and institutes were named in the 2024 Stanford University-Elsevier’s World’s Top 2% Scientists, an esteemed ranking that identifies the most cited scholars in their fields.
This prestigious list identifies the world’s leading researchers and represents approximately two per cent of all scientists worldwide whose work has had a significant impact across various scientific disciplines.
The number of academic citations of research, and the quality of the peer-reviewed journals in which they appear, are a benchmark of the value of the research undertaken and presented.
Charles Sturt Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Mark Evans (pictured left) said the University is proud that its dedicated researchers have been recognised by Elsevier BV and Stanford University as among the World’s Top 2% Scientists (single-year achievement).
“This prestigious acknowledgement highlights their exceptional contributions to the global scientific community and their expertise in their respective fields,” Professor Evans said.
Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Michael Friend said, “The 2024 list, with more than 30 Charles Sturt University researchers included, demonstrates how our research is contributing to the global research effort, and recognises the outstanding research talent we have.
“It is wonderful to see colleagues from across all our faculties and institutes represented and I congratulate them for their achievements and their commitment to research that is truly world-class with impact that makes the world a better place.”
Three Charles Sturt researchers provided comment on their inclusion on the list.
Professor in Nuclear Medicine Geoff Currie, AM, (pictured top, left) in the Charles Sturt School of Dentistry and Medical Sciences said his ranking coincided with the emergence of a new discipline of ‘Physics and Nuclear Science’ at Charles Sturt.
“This builds on established footprints in nuclear science, physics and nuclear medicine, with new in-demand courses like the Bachelor of Nuclear Science and Safety, and the Graduate Certificate in Nuclear Safeguards and Security,” Professor Currie said.
“These courses are designed to address a shortage in nuclear aware and nuclear capable workforces in health, education, military, science, research, space and mining.”
Professor in Veterinary Parasitology Shokoofeh Shamsi (pictured top, centre) in the Charles Sturt School of Agricultural, Environmental and Veterinary Sciences is a leader in the field of parasitology and biomedical research and said she was deeply honoured to receive this recognition for five consecutive years.
“This is not just a reflection of my research, but of the persistence and dedication that has carried me through my academic journey,” Professor Shamsi said. “As a woman from a non-English speaking background, my path has been paved with rejections, and I was often told, ‘You can’t do this’, or ‘You shouldn’t pursue that’. But I stand here as proof that persistence pays off. I am especially grateful to the incredible collaborators and supporters who have contributed to my research and inspired me to push forward.”
Professor in Computer Science Manoranjan Paul (pictured top, right) in the Charles Sturt School of Computing, Mathematics and Engineering thanked the University, his collaborators, PhD students and research assistants.
“I’m pleased to see my name in the World’s Top 2% Scientist List for the past consecutive four years, and this achievement inspires me to work even harder,” he said.

Stanford University’s list of World’s Top 2% Scientists is based on a two per cent or above percentile rank, or the top 100,000 by c-score (with and without self-citations). It encompasses standardised data on citations, h-index and a wide range of bibliometric indicators. Researchers are classified into 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields, drawing from Scopus data provided by Elsevier through ICSR Lab.
