The title of Emeritus Professor was conferred on Professor John Tulloch at the Charles Sturt University (CSU) Faculty of Arts graduation ceremony in Bathurst on Wednesday 18 December.

Guests at the graduation ceremony were informed that the University Council resolved to confer this title on Professor Tulloch in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the establishment of Charles Sturt University (CSU), and particularly to research and the social sciences and cultural studies.

Professor Tulloch was heralded as one of the University's most distinguished professors and a great contributor to the formation of the University.

The formal citation read to the audience notes that since leaving CSU, Professor Tulloch has pursued a distinguished academic career. Now aged 71 and retiring from formal academic work, Professor Tulloch wishes to re-establish his links with the University as he regards his time at CSU as central to his career and his academic vision.

The audience heard that Professor Tulloch is one of the most distinguished academics and intellectuals to have graced CSU. He is the author, co-author or editor of 20 books which have made fundamental contributions to contemporary social and cultural theory and policy. He has an outstanding record nationally and internationally of success in winning large competitive academic grants. Post-retirement, he will continue as a peer reviewer for Excellence in Research for Australia.

Professor Tulloch also made a major contribution to CSU as a Head of School and Research Centre Director. His influence in the 1990s and the early years of this century were very important to establishing a university research and teaching culture, not just in his School but across CSU. Some of his most important work, especially the link between risk theory and social policy, is linked both in his mind and in the broader community with his time at CSU and the opportunities CSU provided.
